The “Jazz Project" Big Band is currently engaged to perform the first Monday of the month at one of San Diego's most pleasant and intimate music venues, Dizzy's, 344 7th Ave in the Gaslamp area of downtown. The band is one of San Diego's brightest new jazz aggregations, composed of the area's finest amateur and professional musicians. The band rehearses Monday evenings at Victor's by the Bay and has been performing regularly in the San Diego area including a KSDS Jazz 88.3 radio broadcast. Lead trumpet and talented arranger, Marty Conley provides musical genius and each section features rock solid ensemble playing. The 8 brass, 5 sax, 4 rhythm are entertaining souls that enjoy people pleasing, toe tapping, mind-candy music making! Bruce Cameron, Dick McGuane, David Castel de Oro and Gaspar Constantini often are featured soloists in concerts. The director, Michael Smith, recently retired from his teaching duties at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts jazz program and leads the ensemble. In two words, “They entertain!" They play the music of new arrangers and the tried and true writers of the modern big band jazz idiom such as Tom Kubis, Sammy Nestico, Mark Taylor, and Don Rader among others.
