Five Concerts By Juilliard's Jazz Ensembles In 2002-2003 Feature "The American Standards", "Afro-Cuban/Brazilian Music, Jazz Piano", And "Music For Jazz Trombone Choir" Directed By Wycliffe Gordon

Three Conversations In Jazz Feature Dr. Billy Taylor, Jimmy Heath, And Max Roach

In addition to the already-announced Juilliard Jazz Orchestra concerts (Music of Duke Ellington on October 2, the Orchestra's Birdland debut on February 19, Music of Stan Kenton on February 27, and Student Arrangements/Compositions on May 6), the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies, a collaboration of The Juilliard School and Jazz at Lincoln Center, presents Juilliard's jazz musicians in trios, quartets, and other small ensembles throughout the 2002-2003 season. On Monday, November 4 at 8 PM, Juilliard Jazz Ensembles play The American Standards: Music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Richard Rodgers in arrangements by Juilliard Jazz students. Monday, December 9 at 8 PM Juilliard Jazz Ensembles present Afro-Cuban/Brazilian Music, and on Wednesday, February 5 at 8 PM Juilliard Jazz faculty member and former Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra trombonist Wycliffe Gordon leads Juilliard's Jazz trombonists in Music for Jazz Trombone Choir. Student jazz pianists are featured in a program of Jazz Piano on Monday, March 31 at 8 PM. Smaller ensembles make their last appearances on Monday, April 28 at 8 PM, featuring the compositions and arrangements of their fellow Jazz students. Concerts by Juilliard's Jazz musicians are FREE, and no tickets are required. The concerts take place in Paul Recital Hall located in The Juilliard School at 60 Lincoln Center Plaza. Conversations in Jazz, also a collaboration of the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies and Jazz at Lincoln Center, is a series of collegial conversations on topics ranging from technique and repertoire to jazz education and career advice for musicians. On Monday, November 18 at 7 PM, pianist Renee Rosnes interviews veteran jazz pianist and educator Dr. Billy Taylor. The series continues on Monday, December 2 at 7 PM when Victor Goines, artistic director of Jazz at Juilliard, interviews jazz saxophone great Jimmy Heath. The final 2002-2003 entry in the series will take place on Monday, February 3 at 7 PM, with Juilliard Jazz percussion faculty member Carl Allen interviewing legendary jazz drummer Max Roach. Juilliard's Conversations in Jazz are FREE, and no tickets are required. All Conversations in Jazz take place in Juilliard's Morse Recital Hall, located at 155 W. 65th Street.
